Look at these sentences :
1. Ram is old.
2. Shyam is older than Ram.
3. Bhim is the Oldest of the three.
In these sentences, the words Old, Older and Oldest have been used as adjectives. All the three are different forms of the same adjective Old.
In example 1 :
we are not comparing Ram with any other man. We are just saying that Ram is Old.
In example 2 :
we are comparing two persons-Ram and Shyam -and saying that Shyam is Older than Ram.
In example 3 :
we are comparing more than two persons (three persons in fact and saying that Bhim is the Oldest of the three).
We use adjectives to compare persons or things. When we make these comparisons, the adjectives we use change in form. We have seen that some adjectives have three forms. We say that some adjectives have three degrees of comparison.
